Julian Alvarez’s representatives have once again told Atletico Madrid that the striker wants to leave this summer, reviving a transfer push that the Spanish club had hoped to shut down with a new contract. The 26-year-old Argentina international has not changed his position, and his camp have reiterated their intention to pursue a move in the current window.
Atletico had been trying to keep Alvarez by offering improved terms and convincing him to commit his long-term future to the club. Instead, they are now increasingly aware that they may face a difficult battle to hold on to the World Cup winner, with interest building from some of Europe’s biggest sides and the fee expected to top £100million.
Barcelona remain Alvarez’s preferred destination, as they have throughout the saga, but their finances are still the main obstacle to any quick breakthrough. Club officials would struggle to assemble a package that matches Atletico’s demands outright, even if they have not ruled themselves out of the race. They are understood to believe a creative structure could still emerge later in the window, including the possible inclusion of players in a wider agreement.
That is where the picture gets complicated for Barcelona. Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal have emerged as the strongest immediate challengers, and both are prepared to meet Atletico’s financial expectations. Both clubs are also exploring player-plus-cash offers in an effort to gain an edge in negotiations, leaving Barcelona to rely on a different kind of advantage: Alvarez’s clear preference and the long-standing relationship between his camp and the Catalan club.
PSG view Alvarez as one of the elite forwards who could anchor their evolving sporting project. Arsenal, meanwhile, are still searching for a world-class attacker to lift Mikel Arteta’s frontline and make the Premier League champions even more dangerous in front of goal next season. Both clubs have also received encouragement that Alvarez is open to their projects if Barcelona cannot turn admiration into a viable bid.
This is not the first time Atletico have had to deal with the threat of losing him. TEAMtalk first reported in January that Alvarez and those close to him were weighing a move away from the Metropolitano, and the latest message from his representatives suggests that concern has only deepened. Atletico believed an improved contract might change the mood. It has not.
For now, Barcelona still hold the decisive card in the player’s mind, but Atletico are facing a market that can pay, and that usually changes the outcome. Unless Barcelona find room to move quickly and creatively, the club that wants him most may not be the club that can actually get the deal done.
