EAGAN, Minn. — Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy took a similar number of snaps at Minnesota Vikings practice on Wednesday, with head coach Kevin O'Connell giving both quarterbacks hands-on feedback on the field as the team sorted through a competition that has not produced a starter yet.
The Vikings signed Murray in March and have kept the quarterback job open since then, with O'Connell declining to name him the starter after the deal. Wednesday offered the clearest look yet at how the team is dividing the work between two first-round picks, each getting time with star receivers and each being coached in real time.
Murray, the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, is not new to this stage. He started 87 games in Arizona, has thrown for 3,500 yards in four NFL seasons and has produced a two-to-one touchdown-to-interception ratio. On Wednesday, he also connected down the field with former undrafted receiver Dontae Fleming and later hit Jordan Addison along the right sideline against a blitz look from Brian Flores' defense.
Addison came away impressed. “He’s a vet,” he said of Murray. “He knows what he’s doing.” The receiver also described him as “a really laid-back type of guy,” adding, “He’s just chill, cool.”
Murray, for his part, projected no doubt about where he stands mentally. “My confidence is unshakable,” he said, adding, “That’s how I feel about myself, regardless of what happens.” He wore a beanie during his post-practice news conference despite 90-degree weather, blaming helmet hair for the choice.
The bigger picture is simple: Minnesota is treating the position as a competition between two former first-round quarterbacks, and the standard O'Connell is trying to set is not just about who throws the prettiest pass in camp. It is about who can command the offense, respond to pressure and make the room look settled before the season forces a decision. Wednesday did not settle it, but it showed the Vikings are serious about making the battle real.
