A large fire broke out at a kosher supermarket in Golders Green, north London, on Wednesday morning, sending around 70 firefighters and ten engines to the scene. The London Fire Brigade received the first of 33 calls at 6.47am and crews were soon working at the blaze near Golders Green Road.
The brigade said smoke from the fire was significant and urged people in the area to keep their windows and doors shut. A 32-metre turntable ladder was also sent to the scene as firefighters tackled the blaze at a three-storey building with a shop on the ground floor and premises above.
Crews were dispatched from Finchley, Willesden, West Hampstead and surrounding fire stations, while a number of road closures were put in place, including on Golders Green Road near the junction with Beverley Gardens. People were asked to avoid the area while firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.
The cause of the blaze was not known, the brigade said, and that question is now likely to shape the next stage of the response once the fire is brought under control. For now, the priority in Golders Green is containing the smoke, clearing the area and making the building safe enough for investigators to begin their work.
