Mateo Joseph has said goodbye to Mallorca after a season-long loan that ended with an emotional social media post, a lingering injury and a club that missed out on survival by the narrowest of margins. The Leeds United forward, who remains under contract until 2028, thanked supporters and teammates after his spell in Spain came to a close.
Joseph scored two goals and added four assists in 29 La Liga appearances for Mallorca, a return that included one of the club’s standout nights in April when he helped set up Vedat Muriqi’s winner in a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid. He was sidelined by a ligament injury before the end of the campaign and later wrote that it had been difficult to find the words for the last few days, adding that he never felt like he was only passing through and instead felt part of the club, the dressing room and the city.
His message landed at a moment when Mallorca were already digesting a brutal finish to the season. They were relegated from La Liga on goal difference, a collapse that left Joseph saying he knew how hard the team had worked and how much the dressing room had suffered. He thanked the teammates, staff, doctors and everyone inside the club, before singling out the fans and saying he believed this was not the end, but the beginning of something that would bring them back stronger.
The farewell also offered a glimpse of how much regard Joseph earned during his loan. Junior Firpo replied to the post with “Always with you,” while Wilfried Gnonto and Illan Meslier both liked it, a small but telling show of support for a player whose future now points back to West Yorkshire. Joseph made his first-team debut for Leeds under Jesse Marsch in November 2022, but he did not appear to have a future there after falling out with Daniel Farke last summer.
Leeds secured their place in the Premier League for another season, and the club is expected to have several incoming and outgoing moves in the summer transfer window. Joseph’s contract runs to 2028, but the shape of his next step looks unsettled after a loan that gave him regular minutes, a defining win against Real Madrid and a public farewell that sounded more like a closing chapter than a routine return.
