A murder investigation has been launched after a 34-year-old man was found in the water at Barmouth beach in Gwynedd and later pronounced dead on Monday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to Barmouth shortly after 15:00 BST, after a man was spotted in the water at the beach. Despite efforts to save him, he died at the scene.
North Wales Police said a 24-year-old man from Birmingham has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.
Det Supt Chris Bell urged anyone who was at Barmouth beach and saw what happened to contact police. He also asked people who took photos or videos in the afternoon to send them to the force.
The force has not said how the man died or exactly how the incident unfolded. That is now the central gap in the case, and police are treating witnesses and images from the beach as crucial to understanding what happened before the 34-year-old was pronounced dead.
Bell said: “An investigation into the man's death has been launched and I am urging anybody who was at Barmouth beach and witnessed the incident to contact police.”
