Megan Stalter and Paul W. Downs arrived at the 2026 American Music Awards in Las Vegas on Monday with a look that was equal parts joke, tribute and red-carpet commitment: matching belt buckles with each other’s faces, and a styling choice that made Stalter nearly unrecognizable at first glance. The Hacks co-stars walked the carpet at the MGM Grand Garden Arena just days before the series finale is set to air on HBO Max.
Stalter wore a long black wig, thin eyebrows and blue eyeshadow, while Downs matched the bit in his own way. The two told a crowd of photographers and reporters they were not doing cosplay. Downs put it this way: “Cosplay? I’m finally allowed to be myself. I came to Vegas with just Meg and no one else? Yeah, I get to be myself. TSA almost threw us right out the plane. Southwest style.” Stalter answered with her own deadpan line: “This is our every day looks, who are we cosplaying as? Two hot models? Who do music?”
Downs was later seen helping Stalter with her hair as they posed for photos, a small moment that fit the tone of the night: playful, coordinated and fully in on the bit. They were set to present together during the show that evening, turning a red-carpet appearance into part of the awards-show performance itself.
The timing gives the appearance extra weight. The pair were on hand for an event hosted by Queen Latifah, who returned to the AMAs after more than 30 years since she last hosted, while Taylor Swift led the nominations with 8 nods. For Stalter and Downs, though, the more immediate marker was the finale of Hacks, a reminder that their Vegas turn came as the show they helped carry was heading into its last chapter. The answer to whether they were dressing for a role or for themselves was there in the quotes, the props and the faces on their belts: they were doing both, and they knew exactly how absurd that looked.
