Jon Cryer joined the cast of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee on May 11 as Vice Principal Douglas Panch, the production said. The Emmy Award-winning comedic legend is taking on the role of the spelling bee's co-moderator in the Off-Broadway show.
The casting gives the production a recognizable name at a time when it is leaning on a large ensemble of familiar stage and screen performers. Kevin McHale is making his New York stage debut as William Barfée, while Jasmine Amy Rogers plays Olive Ostrovsky, Justin Cooley plays Leaf Coneybear, Philippe Arroyo plays Chip Tolentino, Autumn Best plays Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre, Leana Rae Concepcion plays Marcy Park, Lilli Cooper plays Rona Lisa Peretti and Matt Manuel plays Mitch Mahoney. Brandon L. Armstrong, Jahbril Cook, DeMarius Copes, Vanessa Magula, Emily Nicole Rudolph and Cecilia Snow are understudies.
Then the production hit a snag. It shared on a social post that tonight's performance was canceled due to illness. For an Off-Broadway show built around timing, improvisation and audience participation, that kind of disruption lands hard, especially just as Cryer is stepping into the cast.
Cryer is best known for his work in Two and a Half Men and Pretty in Pink, credits that make him one of the most familiar faces in the production. Douglas Panch, his character, is the spelling bee's co-moderator, a role that sits at the center of the show's comic machinery. The cancellation means the next question is not whether the new cast can draw attention, but when the production can get back in front of an audience.
