Kyle Busch, one of Nascar’s most accomplished drivers and one of its most recognizable figures, died suddenly on Thursday at 41 after what his family called a severe illness that began as pneumonia and progressed into sepsis. He had been expected to compete in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina this weekend.
Busch’s family said a medical evaluation showed the illness led to rapid and overwhelming associated complications. Sepsis is a serious reaction to infection that can become life-threatening. His death cuts short a 20-year career that had already made him one of the most decorated drivers in the sport’s history.
Over that span, Busch won 234 races across Nascar’s top three series, more than any driver in history, according to. He collected 2 Cup Series titles and 63 wins at the sport’s top level, and he was in the middle of his 22nd season in Nascar’s top division when he died. Known to fans as Rowdy, Busch built a reputation as a driver who could dominate on the track and never softened the edges that made him a star.
Nascar called him a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation. Steve O’Donnell, the series’ chief executive, said Busch lived “just about every chapter of what you could do in Nascar,” adding that he was fierce, competitive and “always good for a great quote.” O’Donnell said the races would continue and the event would honor Busch’s memory. His number and truck were on display ahead of the event, according to local media.
Busch’s reach went beyond racing. O’Donnell praised his charity work and pointed to the foundation he started with his wife to support awareness and advancement for IVF and infertility treatments. Busch is survived by his parents, his wife and two young children.
The shock around his death was immediate. Denny Hamlin said he could “absolutely cannot comprehend this news,” and added: “We just need to think of his family during this time. We love you KB.” For Nascar, the weekend at Charlotte is now as much about mourning one of its defining competitors as it is about the race itself.
