Torreense won the Taça de Portugal for the first time in its history on Sunday, beating Sporting 2-1 after extra time at the Estádio Nacional. Kévin Zohi struck in the fourth minute, Luis Suárez levelled in the 54th, and Stopira settled the final from the penalty spot in the 113th minute.
The final stayed level after 90 minutes and then turned on a late sequence that left Sporting with nothing to show for a long night in Jamor. Mohamed Ali-Diadié had a goal disallowed in the 94th minute, then Maxi Araújo was shown a direct red card after the penalty incident that led to Stopira's winner. Rui Silva was in goal for Sporting, while Lucas Paes started for Torreense as Luis Tralhão guided the underdogs to the club's biggest result.
The match had been billed as a chance for Sporting to recover from an uneven run, but Torreense handled the pressure and took the moments that decided a final. Zohi's early finish gave Torreense belief, Suárez's equaliser forced the game back into balance, and the extra-time penalty pushed the Lisbon-area club into history.
At Jamor, where the Taça de Portugal final is played, Torreense did not just survive against a bigger opponent. It won the trophy outright, and it did so with a performance that turned one early goal, one equaliser and one late penalty into the first cup title the club has ever lifted.
