A fire at a building housing shops and flats in Lower Clapton was brought under control on Saturday evening after eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters responded to the scene, London Fire Brigade said.
The fire broke out near the junction of Chatsworth Road and Glenarm Road on May 23, with the Brigade receiving the first of 50 calls at 2134. Crews were sent from Stoke Newington, Leyton, Leytonstone, Walthamstow, Tottenham and Whitechapel fire stations, and a 32-metre turntable ladder from Tottenham was used as an observation tower.
There were no reports of any injuries. Firefighters were expected to remain at the scene for several hours to dampen down as Chatsworth Road stayed closed between the junctions of Millfields Road and Homerton High Street.
The fire was contained, but the cause had not yet been determined. That leaves the key question for residents and shopkeepers in Lower Clapton not whether the flames are out, but what started them in a mixed-use building on one of the area's busiest roads.
