George Russell delivered the top F1 results in Montreal on Saturday, taking pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix and giving Mercedes a front-row lockout for Sunday's 70-lap race. Kimi Antonelli qualified second, 0.068 seconds behind Russell, after the Briton produced a pole lap of 1m 12.578s on his final effort.
Russell had already won the Sprint earlier in the day, and his final lap came after he aborted his first flying run in the last segment of qualifying. The Mercedes driver said his ride had felt worse than on Friday, but the lap that mattered came together at the end and left the team with both cars at the front of the grid at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Lando Norris qualified behind the Mercedes pair, with Oscar Piastri slotting in behind him, while Lewis Hamilton took fifth after making a mistake on his second run. Max Verstappen was sixth after complaining about his car's straightline speed. The rest of the top 10 thinned out behind them, with Nico Hulkenberg 11th, Liam Lawson 12th, Gabriel Bortoleto 13th, Pierre Gasly 14th and Carlos Sainz 15th.
The lower half of the field produced its own margin calls. Ollie Bearman ended up 16th, while Esteban Ocon was also classified 16th after missing out on Q2 by just 0.070s. Alex Albon qualified 17th and Fernando Alonso 18th, leaving Sergio Perez 20th and under investigation for several incidents, including blocking Alonso on his final flying lap. For Mercedes, the headline is simple: Russell's pole and Antonelli's second place turned Saturday into a statement, and Sunday now begins with the team in the strongest possible starting position.
