João Palhinha is in talks with Sporting CP over a return to Lisbon, and those discussions are understood to be moving in the right direction. The 30-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, but his future now appears to be shifting back toward Portugal.
According to A Bola, talks between Palhinha and Sporting CP are progressing well. The main issue is not whether there is interest from the Lisbon club or from the player himself, but whether Bayern will accept a loan with an option to buy or insist on a permanent transfer. Tottenham have a €30m option to buy, yet the player’s preference is to return home.
That leaves Bayern with a decision that goes beyond this one move. The club views the loan as not having gone to plan, and Palhinha does not appear to have a clear place in Vincent Kompany’s tactical setup. A second season away would also delay Bayern recouping the fee they paid to bring him to Bavaria, even though any money from a sale could be put back into the summer market.
Tottenham and head coach Roberto De Zerbi want to keep him, which adds another layer to a move that is still being shaped by different priorities on three sides. Spurs’ interest is rooted in a season that kept Palhinha in London for the campaign, even as the team were in a relegation scrap on the final matchday of the Premier League season. Bayern, meanwhile, must decide whether to cash in now, loan him again or risk carrying a player under contract until 2027/28 without a clear role.
For Palhinha, the choice seems simpler. He is 30, he wants Portugal, and Sporting are now the club most closely linked with making that return happen. What Bayern decide next will determine whether that path opens this summer or is pushed back again.
