The Birmingham Stallions beat the Columbus Aviators 14-3 on Saturday in a game that never left the defensive end of the field for long. Birmingham survived a scoreless first quarter, then pulled away late with a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown and an interception in the final two minutes.
The turning point started with the quarterbacks giving the ball away early. Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Jalan McClendon each threw interceptions in a first quarter that ended without a point, and Columbus finally broke through in the second when Jonah Dalmas hit a 48-yard field goal. Birmingham answered in the third quarter when Thompson-Robinson found Jordan Thomas on a 29-yard touchdown pass, giving the Stallions the lead they would not surrender.
Steven Gilmore delivered the play that changed the game for good, blocking a 55-yard field-goal attempt and taking it back for a touchdown. Tae Crowder then intercepted a pass with 1:21 to play to close the door on Columbus and finish off a win built more on field position and mistakes than on offense.
Thompson-Robinson finished 12-for-20 for 126 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception. Thomas caught three passes for 28 yards and the score. McClendon went 20-for-31 for 150 yards with two interceptions, while Crowder added 11 total tackles to go with the late takeaway.
The result mattered because it came in a Week 8 slate that carried playoff consequences elsewhere across the UFL, with Orlando beating Dallas, Louisville defeating DC and Houston pulling the upset of St. Louis. Birmingham's win was narrower in style than in margin, but it kept the Stallions steady in a race where every defensive stop can change the picture.
The teams will meet again on Saturday, May 23, at 3 p.m. ET in Columbus, giving the Aviators a quick chance to answer for the blocked kick, the interceptions and the late seal. For now, Birmingham leaves with a 14-3 win and a performance that was decided by defense, not tempo.
