Brondby have sacked Steve Cooper after a disappointing season that ended with the club in fourth place in the Danish Superliga and without a place in the Conference League. The decision came after Brondby lost the playoff match against FC Copenhagen for European qualification.
The dismissal leaves Brondby searching for a manager who can fit a clearer identity and turn a frustrating season into a reset. New football director Julius Ohnesorge said the club needs to "find its way home" and rebuild a culture driven by "wildness, authenticity, and ambition," a sign that the next appointment will be judged as much on style as on results.
Several names are already linked with the job. Ian Cathro has emerged as one possibility after recently being named Portuguese Primeira Liga Manager of the Month, while Henriksen is available after parting ways with Mainz 05. Thomas Letsch, another candidate, is a free agent after being released from Red Bull Salzburg and brings experience from VfL Bochum in the German Bundesliga, as well as a previous stint working with Benjamin Schmedes at Vitesse.
There is also a strong Brondby connection in Norgaard. As a teenager he captained the club’s junior and youth sides and won Brondby’s youth player of the year award before later working as assistant manager at Sparta Prague. More recently, he has established Sonderjyske as a competitive side using a 4-2-3-1 system, making him a candidate who would already understand the expectations around the club.
Rydstrom offers a different profile. He won back-to-back Swedish league titles in 2023 and 2024 with Malmo FF, added the Swedish Cup, and was most recently head coach of the Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer. That record gives Brondby a proven winner if they want to look beyond internal familiarity and toward a manager with recent silverware.
For Brondby, Cooper’s exit is only the start of the rebuild. The club has made clear it wants a more forceful identity, and the next appointment will show whether it is willing to back that vision with a coach who can deliver it immediately.
