Apple said one of those slots could eventually be used for promoted locations, which hints at how the feature may evolve after launch. The App Store update is more limited in scope, but it changes how some subscriptions can be paid for. Apple started offering an annual subscription split into 12 monthly payments, which it described as a monthly with 12-month commitment plan. The option is available across the world except in the US and Singapore, making it a broad international rollout with two notable gaps. The plan may ease the upfront cost of some in-app subscriptions, but Apple has not said when, or whether, those excluded markets will get it.

Taken together, the iOS 26.5 changes show Apple using a single update to touch three popular iPhone apps at once. The company is improving privacy in Messages, nudging discovery in Maps and changing how recurring purchases work in the App Store.
