An Australian tourist died after falling from the Inca Trail on the way to Machu Picchu in Peru, authorities said. Matthew Cameron Paton, 53, had been reported missing on Wednesday, and his body was later found.
Andina reported that Paton had arrived in the region with his wife 12 days before heading out on the trail, where he was said to be beginning a four-day journey. It is believed he fell about 300 meters into a hard-to-reach area along the route, adding to the difficulty of recovery efforts.
The Inca Trail is the route most often linked with visits to Machu Picchu, one of Peru’s best-known destinations, and the fatal fall has now drawn attention to the dangers of the trek itself. said it had reached out to Dfat and Peruvian police for further details.
Paton’s death leaves unanswered how the fall unfolded and what led to the emergency response that followed, but the basic facts are already clear: a planned trek ended in a remote recovery operation, and a family trip turned into a fatal accident.
