U.S. Senator Cory Booker on Monday endorsed Nick Veliky and Orlando Cruz for Passaic County commissioner and backed Zoila Cassanova for re-election as surrogate, putting his name behind the Passaic County Democratic Committee team days before the June 2 Democratic Primary.
The endorsements were announced in Woodland Park, New Jersey, with Booker saying Veliky and Cruz have shown a strong commitment to serving their communities and bringing people together to get things done. He said they understand the pressures families face and are focused on building stronger, more connected communities. He also said Cassanova has served Passaic County families with compassion and integrity.
The primary will determine the Democratic nominees for county commissioner and surrogate, making the endorsement a timely boost for the ticket as candidates look to consolidate support before voters head to the polls. For Booker, the move ties him to a local race that has become part of a wider effort to present a unified county slate.
That broader coalition already includes Governor Mikie Sherrill, legislators, county officials, mayors, councilmembers and Democratic leaders from across Passaic County, giving the team a deep list of backers as the campaign enters its final stretch.
Veliky and Cruz thanked Booker for his support and said they will keep engaging with voters across the county. They said they are focused on delivering real results, keeping Passaic County affordable, strengthening services and making sure government works for everyone. Cassanova also thanked the senator and said she remains dedicated to serving families across Passaic County with compassion and professionalism.
The endorsement does not settle the race, but it does sharpen the contours of it: Booker is signaling that the county party’s preferred team should be the one voters choose on June 2, and the candidates now have to turn that support into votes.
