ABC has ordered a new Grey’s Anatomy offshoot straight to series, sending the franchise to rural West Texas for the first time and setting the untitled drama for midseason 2027. The project, a greys anatomy texas spinoff, will follow a team inside a medical center far from the coastal cities that have defined the brand since 2005.
The series is being co-created, written and executive produced by Shonda Rhimes and Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Meg Marinis. Ellen Pompeo is also executive producing, along with Betsy Beers, and the show will be produced by Shondaland and 20th Television. Marinis said she was “incredibly excited to expand the Grey’s Anatomy universe,” adding that the new stories would carry “the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from Grey’s for more than two decades” while being set in her home state of Texas.
The order makes the new drama the fourth series in the Grey’s Anatomy franchise, which began with the flagship medical drama in 2005 and later added Private Practice and Station 19. It is also the first Grey’s offshoot not set on the West Coast or in a big city, and the first not built around a series regular from the mothership. ABC has not yet determined whether Marinis will serve as showrunner across both Grey’s series.
The network’s timing matters. ABC’s upcoming 23rd season of Grey’s Anatomy had been expected to be trimmed for budget reasons, after the show produced 18 episodes in each of the last two seasons. Grey’s Anatomy and the new spinoff would likely share a time period and require limited-run orders for both, with the flagship series airing in the fall and the new drama taking Grey’s Anatomy’s Thursday 10 p.m. slot behind 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Nashville.
There may still be a bridge back to Seattle Grace, if only a narrow one. A possible connection to Grey’s Anatomy could come through one or more characters, with Debbie Allen’s Catherine Fox among those that have been discussed. Last fall, Marinis said she knew a couple of Texas families who had lost children in the Camp Mystic tragedy, a reminder that the setting is not just a change of scenery but part of the drama’s emotional frame. ABC’s move also fits a broader expansion of its scripted slate, including The Rookie: North, even as existing series are renewed.
For ABC, the answer to the question raised by the headline is now clear: the franchise is not just continuing, it is widening. The new series pushes Grey’s Anatomy into a new region, a new setting and a new kind of lead-up to 2026-2027, with midseason 2027 now the date to watch.
