Chelsea confirmed on Sunday that Xabi Alonso will take charge of the men's team on a four-year contract, with the Spaniard due to begin work at Stamford Bridge on July 1, 2026. The appointment brings one of Europe’s most admired coaches to London after his rise with Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen.
Alonso arrives after leading Bayer Leverkusen to the first league title in the club’s history, a breakthrough that cemented his reputation before Chelsea moved to secure him. He said Chelsea was “one of the biggest clubs in world football” and said it filled him with “immense pride” to become manager of the club.
“From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition,” Alonso said. “We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.” He added that there is “great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club” and said it would be his “great honour” to lead it.
His arrival also raises immediate questions over how Chelsea will shape the squad around him. Caught Offside reported that Alonso already knows his first three transfer targets, with an elite number nine, an experienced goalkeeper and a ball-playing centre-back said to be on the list. The biggest priority is believed to be a new striker, with Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen understood to be the top target.
Chelsea is also understood to be interested in AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, while Ivory Coast international Ousmane Diomande is being targeted as a centre-back from Sporting CP. Those links suggest the club is already moving to match Alonso’s stated aim of building a side that can compete for trophies, even though his first day in the job is still more than a year away.
That gap leaves Chelsea in an unusual place: the manager has been named, the long-term plan has been set out, but the squad decisions that will define his start are already being drawn up before he officially steps into the role. As Alonso put it, “Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”
