Callum Slattery is leaving Motherwell after five years, the club said on Monday, bringing to a close a spell that took the English midfielder from a low-key arrival to one of the central figures in their push for Europe. The 27-year-old made 147 appearances and scored 18 goals before the club announced his departure.
"It's always hard to say goodbye," Slattery said, thanking the club and its supporters as he reflected on a stay that began when he arrived at Fir Park as a 21-year-old with little first-team football behind him. He said he was leaving "as a man having made almost 150 appearances for the club," and added that Motherwell had given him "an unbelievable platform" to play regularly.
Slattery's exit comes after a season in which he played a key role in helping Motherwell finish fourth in the Scottish Premiership and secure a Conference League qualifying place. He returned from a 12-month injury lay-off in January last year and went on to help shape the club's best end-of-season finish in the campaign just completed.
The midfielder said the atmosphere at Easter Road, where Motherwell's celebrations marked the end of the season, was the right way to finish. "To finish with those celebrations at Easter Road was the perfect ending to my five years here," he said, thanking everyone at the club and singling out the fans for backing him through his toughest moments.
That support mattered, because Slattery's time at Motherwell was not a straight line. The injury absence threatened to stall his progress, but he returned and became part of a side that delivered a top-four finish and a place in European qualifying. His departure now leaves Motherwell to replace not just a midfielder, but a player who said the club stood by him in "my darkest days" and helped turn promise into a sustained run of first-team football.
For Motherwell, the task is immediate. A player who arrived in need of minutes leaves having delivered them in abundance, and after helping earn a European return, Slattery exits with the club's next challenge already set: carrying that momentum into next season without one of the men who helped make it possible.
