FC Barcelona agreed a deal with Manchester United for Marcus Rashford on a season-long loan until June 30, 2026. The agreement included an option for a permanent transfer set at around €30 million ($34.9 million). Rashford, wearing the No. 14 jersey, called Barcelona a club "where dreams come true."
Before Barcelona, Rashford had spent the second half of the 2024/25 season on loan at Aston Villa, where he scored four goals and provided six assists in 17 appearances under Unai Emery.
Rashford's Stunning Season at Barcelona
The 28-year-old has scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists in 48 matches in all competitions for Barcelona this season — form that has been a major reason why Barcelona have won LaLiga for the second season in a row.
Rashford scored a ninth-minute free-kick to help Barcelona seal the LaLiga title against Real Madrid in the Clasico, only sharpening questions over his future at the club. After the match, Rashford told reporters: "I don't know if I will stay. I am not a magician, but if I was, I would stay."
The Transfer Deadlock — Barcelona vs Manchester United
Rashford has already agreed to take a 40% wage reduction to make a permanent Barcelona stay a reality. He has taken further steps to make it easier for the Catalan club financially, accepting a significant contract sacrifice.
The problem is that Manchester United are not willing to change their stance. A Spanish outlet reported: "The club that owns him is not willing, for now, to either extend the loan or negotiate the terms of the purchase." United want the full €30 million buy-option triggered — a fee analysts describe as a bargain given Rashford's output this season.
Barcelona hold the €30 million buy-option and there is sporting consensus within the club that Rashford has delivered. Manager Hansi Flick values his versatility across all three attacking positions and has directly told president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco that he wants Rashford to stay. However, Barcelona's ongoing salary cap restrictions remain a major financial concern.
Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho Enter the Picture
Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen on launching a sensational summer raid to sign Rashford for Real Madrid, which would directly hijack Barcelona's attempts to secure the forward. Mourinho has an agreement in principle at the Bernabeu and has an existing good relationship with Rashford from their time together at Manchester United.
Mourinho has reportedly requested the signing of Rashford during initial talks over sporting plans at Real Madrid, believing the England international fits perfectly into his playing style. One report now claims Rashford is closer to a permanent move to Real Madrid than a return to Barcelona.
Aston Villa, Michael Carrick and the Return Option
Rashford has little desire to return to England this summer and does not fancy a move to Aston Villa despite Unai Emery's keenness to be reunited with him at Villa Park. Rashford only wants to stay at Barcelona and is determined to explore all options to remain at Camp Nou.
An unexpected complication has emerged at United. Manager Michael Carrick is understood to be close to signing a contract extension at Old Trafford, and his relationship with Rashford is excellent. Should Carrick's renewal be confirmed, United are expected to harden their stance — potentially reopening the door for Rashford's return to the Premier League.
Bayern Munich are also monitoring the situation closely, while Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta remains an admirer of the forward. With his loan expiring at the end of June, a resolution is needed imminently.
