Earl Spencer has married his girlfriend Cat Jarman in a private ceremony in Arizona, according to a joint statement released Tuesday. The 61-year-old, the brother of Princess Diana, wed the Norwegian archaeologist, 43, on Friday in what is his fourth marriage.

The pair said they had moved from colleagues to friends and then to “deep love and connection,” adding that each stage of the relationship had been shaped by laughter and a shared passion for life. They had been dating for two years before the wedding.

Spencer and Jarman’s path together began in work, not romance. He was asked to review her 2021 book River Kings, and the two later launched a podcast and worked together on archaeological digs. Since 2023, they have co-hosted The Rabbit Hole Detective with Richard Coles, and in February they marked their 100th episode.

The marriage comes two months after Spencer’s divorce from Karen Spencer was reported to have been finalised. He and Karen Spencer separated in June 2024 after marrying in 2011 and share one child, Lady Charlotte.

Before that, Spencer was married to Victoria Aitken from 1989 to 1997, and they have four children. His second wife was Caroline Freud, to whom he was married for six years, and they have two children together. Cat Jarman was previously married to Tom Jarman and is the mother of two sons.

Jarman’s legal case against the Earl’s ex-wife was settled in December last year, a separate chapter that now sits behind the couple’s new start. Spencer lives on the Althorp Estate in Northamptonshire, but the wedding took place in Arizona, far from the family home that has long framed his public life.

The timing matters because this was not a sudden turn; it was the end point of a relationship that grew in public view through shared projects, a podcast and weeks of speculation after his divorce was finalized. What the couple has now done is make that bond official, and they did it quickly after the legal pieces of Spencer’s previous marriage were put in place.
