Stephon Castle is expected to spend most of the series on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander when the Spurs face the Thunder, but Carter Bryant could be called on if Castle gets into foul trouble. That possibility has turned Bryant from an extra option into a name worth watching in a matchup built around one of the league’s hardest covers.
Gilgeous-Alexander is a two-time MVP and, by the way he is playing, the best scorer in the world. He is an elite finisher, an even better mid-range shooter and has enjoyed one of his better seasons from beyond the arc. He also gets to the free throw line as often as anyone, which is part of what makes him so difficult to keep in front of for four quarters.
The Spurs enter this series with a team defense that has been phenomenal, and throughout the current playoff run they have looked pretty bulletproof, easing concerns about inexperience and shooting. Castle has handled most of the dirty work all year, and that is why he is the first choice on Gilgeous-Alexander. San Antonio does not have a deep room of good on-ball stoppers, and Devin Vassell and Julian Champagnie are more off-ball-oriented defenders, which leaves the team lighter on direct answers if the primary assignment breaks down.
That is where Bryant comes in. The rookie has already proven to be an advanced defender, especially for his age, and that makes him a surprising backup option rather than the initial matchup. The Spurs may not want to lean on him from the start against a scorer like Gilgeous-Alexander, but they may not have much choice if foul trouble forces their hand.
The series may turn on whether Castle can stay on the floor long enough to keep the Spurs’ preferred defensive structure intact. If he can, San Antonio gets the matchup it wants. If he cannot, Bryant becomes part of the test — not because the Spurs planned it that way, but because Gilgeous-Alexander has a way of making every backup plan look urgent.
