Schools, a library and one city shelter moved quickly across Kansas on Monday as a and a broader severe weather threat pushed districts and communities to change plans before the afternoon and evening storm window. As of 10:30 a.m., the Ell-Saline, Southeast of Saline, Twin Valley and school districts had already announced early dismissal plans and after-school changes.

Southeast of Saline dismissed classes at 2:30 p.m. and pushed its eighth-grade promotion from Monday night to Tuesday, telling families, “Please make all necessary arrangements for the early dismissal as we try to beat the storms predicted for this evening,” The Ell-Saline district sent students home at 1 p.m., in Ottawa County did the same, and Chapman in Dickinson County ended its day at 2 p.m. The also closed at 2 p.m. because of the severe weather threat.

In Rice County, Lyons opened a second tornado shelter on Monday for residents looking for a place to ride out the storms, with shelter available at City Hall at 201 W. Main Street. The moves came as Kansas faced a wider severe weather threat through the day, with the forecast centered on a cold front moving across the state later Monday.

said that front would be the focus for another round of severe storms mainly along and east of a Russell to Pratt line, with the most dangerous period running from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Very large hail, intense wind gusts and the chance of a tornado or two were possible in that stretch, giving schools and local governments little choice but to clear buildings and open shelters before conditions worsened.

The day's rush to dismiss students and open shelter space showed how quickly a tornado watch can change routine in Kansas. By early afternoon, the question was no longer whether communities would adjust, but how many more would do the same before the storms arrived.
