West Ham United were beaten 3-1 by Newcastle United on Sunday, a result that left them in the relegation zone and facing the possibility of going down before they play again. Nuno Espirito Santo said hearing supporters chant “you’re not fit to wear the shirt” after the final whistle “hurt a lot.”

Newcastle settled the match early at St James’ Park, scoring twice inside the opening 19 minutes through Nick Woltemde and William Osula. Nuno changed West Ham to a 4-4-2 formation in the 25th minute, bringing off Jean-Clair Todibo for Taty Castellanos, and the switch briefly gave his side a foothold. Castellanos then scored West Ham’s consolation goal in the 69th minute, but the damage had long been done.

The defeat was West Ham’s third straight league loss and left them two points behind 17th-place Tottenham Hotspur, with both clubs still caught in the arithmetic of survival. Tottenham were due to face Chelsea on Tuesday, and a Chelsea victory would relegate West Ham. Even a draw would effectively send West Ham down because Tottenham have a superior goal difference. West Ham must still beat Leeds United at home next Sunday if they are to keep any realistic hope alive and push the battle to the final day.

Nuno did not dispute the scale of the supporters’ anger. “This is our job, this is our life but the fans are right. Today they showed their anger and frustration, and they have reasons to do it,” he said, adding that the squad should “finish the season with dignity and respect for the fans.” He also said there is “some hope,” though the emphasis now is on respect as much as survival.

Mateus Fernandes offered a similar assessment of a side that never fully recovered after Newcastle’s fast start. He said West Ham “need to believe and do our things” this week, and admitted the team “didn’t play with full fight and spirit like against Arsenal” and “missed everything – fight and energy.” For West Ham, the numbers are simple and brutal: if Chelsea do not win on Tuesday, their english premier league season may be over before they return to the pitch.
