is moving on from , ending his 10-season run as the men’s lacrosse coach and setting off a national search that will begin immediately.

The move closes a tenure that produced a 108-51 record, two national championships and some of the best nights in the program’s history. Tiffany guided Virginia to titles in 2019 and 2021, giving him responsibility for two of the seven national championships in the school’s record book.

The decision comes after a season that swung from stunning highs to damaging lows. Virginia opened by losing ranked games to Richmond and Maryland, then turned around and beat No. 1 Notre Dame. The Cavaliers later beat Notre Dame again in the championship and also won their rivalry matchup against Duke, only to follow those results with back-to-back losses to North Carolina and Syracuse before falling at home to Georgetown in the postseason.

That final loss framed Tiffany’s own assessment of the year. He said after the Georgetown game that he felt he needed to apologize to the fan base. He also described the season’s swings as enough to “give you an ulcer, a headache, or whatever,” and said the Cavaliers had shown they can play great lacrosse at times but did not put their best foot forward against Georgetown.

Tiffany added that Georgetown was a very good team, that its goalie kept stoning Virginia and that stepped up when needed. He also said there were too many turnovers by his own team.

The numbers under Tiffany give Virginia plenty to weigh. He delivered trophies and helped preserve the school’s place among the sport’s giants, but the uneven finish left the program looking for steadier ground. With a search now underway, Virginia will try to replace a coach who could beat anyone on the right day and who left behind a standard measured not just in wins, but in championships.
