Manchester United said Tyrell Malacia will leave the club when his contract expires in June 2026, closing the door on an injury-hit spell that has stretched across three years. The Dutch defender made only two senior appearances in the 2025-26 campaign, both as a late substitute against Newcastle United.
Malacia, who joined United from Feyenoord in July 2022, has made 49 first-team appearances for the club. United said he was also part of the matchday squad when they lifted the Carabao Cup in 2023, and he spent part of last season on loan at PSV Eindhoven.
The announcement lands as United continue a summer clear-out that is already taking shape around Old Trafford. The club have also said Casemiro will depart when his contract expires, while Rasmus Højlund has confirmed a permanent move to Napoli, a shift that underlines how quickly the squad is being reshaped ahead of the new season. For Malacia, it also closes a long run of frustration shaped by fitness setbacks rather than regular football.
That was clear at the final home game of the campaign, when Michael Carrick urged supporters to get behind him. “There’s Tyrell, who I spoke to the boys about before kick-off. He’s been through a tough time due to injuries. I encourage you to show him your support,” Carrick told the crowd before the 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest, where Malacia was on the bench.
United’s parting message was simple: “Thanks to Ty for all his efforts and the best of luck for the future from everyone at the club.” The next step is already fixed. Malacia will see out the final year of his deal and then leave as a free agent, one more sign that United’s rebuild is moving from promise to exit.
