Melissa Gilbert returned to Instagram on Saturday with a makeup-free selfie and a caption that framed the post as a small act of carrying on. It was her first post on her personal account since January.
The 62-year-old actor wrote that she would take the challenge posed by women posting photos on the Modern Prairie app and bring those images over to Instagram. In the post, Gilbert wrote, “This is me. No makeup. Early morning. Jammies. No filter,” and added the hashtag “#LoveLifeEvenWhenItsHard.” She also tagged Modern Prairie, the lifestyle brand and online community she co-founded for women over 50.
Her return landed while her husband, Timothy Busfield, 68, continues to face serious criminal charges. Earlier in 2026, Busfield was indicted on four felony counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor tied to alleged incidents in 2022 and 2023. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The Instagram post also carried the feel of a public reset without fully addressing the legal storm around her family. Gilbert has disabled comments on both recent posts, limiting any direct reaction from followers even as she shared an upbeat message about moving forward. In the past, she has written in court correspondence that Busfield was “my love, my rock, my partner in business and life” and “the beating heart of our wild and wonderful extended family,” adding, “This is the strangest letter I’ve ever had to write. Please, please, take care of my sweet husband.”
That makes the post notable not because it breaks her silence on the case, but because it shows where she is choosing to speak: through a polished message about resilience, on her own terms, while keeping the comments off and the legal fight outside the frame. For now, Gilbert is back on her account, and she is doing it with a message that points forward rather than back.
