broke his right leg after taking an 111 mph line drive off the bat of in the Mets' 5-2 loss to the at Citi Field on May 15, 2026. The pitch that set it in motion was a 94 mph sinker in the top of the fourth inning, and Holmes stayed on the mound long enough to finish the frame.

He did more than survive the inning. Holmes was hit, kept going and threw 26 more pitches after the line drive before he was lifted after a one-out walk in the fifth. manager said X-rays showed a fractured right fibula that will keep the 33-year-old out for a long time.

Mendoza said Holmes insisted he was fine after the impact and that the club checked him out, had him throw a couple pitches and watched him finish the inning. He added that Holmes went back out on his own terms, saying he was good to continue, only for something to look wrong on the last pitch before he came out of the game. The manager said that only after Holmes was in the dugout did the pain and damage become clear.

The injury lands hard because Holmes had been one of the Mets' few bright spots in an otherwise dismal season. He entered Friday third in the with a 1.86 ERA, and even after the loss he was 4-4 with a 2.39 ERA in nine starts, 45 strikeouts and 52 2/3 innings. On the night he was charged with four runs and seven hits over 4 1/3 innings, but the bigger cost was invisible until the X-rays came back.

That is what makes this one linger beyond the box score. Holmes threw 95 pitches in all, including 26 after the line drive that fractured his leg, and the Mets still had to answer why a pitcher who said he felt fine ended up leaving with a long-term injury. The team now has to replace one of its most effective arms, and the season has just taken another hit it can ill afford.
