The 2026 DI men’s lacrosse championship moves into its final two quarterfinal matchups on Sunday, May 17, with the field now closing in on the title game set for Monday, May 25, at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. The tournament is an 18-team, single-elimination bracket that will decide this year’s champion in just over a week.

That format leaves little room for error. Ten teams earned automatic qualifications and eight were selected at large, while the four lowest-ranked AQ teams had to play in the opening round for the final two spots in the first round. For the teams still alive, one loss now ends the season and sends everyone else home.

is the defending champion after beating 13-10 to win the 2025 national title, a victory that ended a drought of nearly 50 years. The Big Red had not won the championship since 1977, and the 2025 run restored a place in the sport’s history that had been out of reach for decades.

That history also reaches back to one of the more complicated chapters in the sport’s championship record. After the 1990 title game, the Committee on Infractions determined that had played while ineligible. Under NCAA rules, and Gait’s records for that championship were vacated, and the NCAA does not recognize Syracuse and coach Roy Simmons Jr.’s 3-0 record for the 1990 championship or Gait’s 7 goals, 7 assists and participation in the game.

This year’s bracket is moving toward a final weekend that will answer the only question that matters in the moment: which team can survive the last round of pressure and earn a place in Charlottesville on May 25. In a tournament this short, the path to the title is as much about staying upright as it is about playing well.
