Marcus Rashford scored again for Barcelona and left his future at Spotify Camp Nou hanging over a summer of talks that may never get simple. His ninth-minute free-kick helped Barcelona seal LaLiga against Real Madrid, but the goal only sharpened the bigger question around the season-long loan from Manchester United.
Rashford, who is on loan from Old Trafford for the season, wants to stay in Barcelona beyond that deal. Under the terms agreed in July, Barcelona have a £26m option to buy him this summer. They would like to keep him, but their financial problems mean they cannot honour the original agreement, so they need to renegotiate with United. United are not interested in changing the fee.
The numbers explain why Barcelona are keen to find a way. Rashford has 14 goals and 14 assists in all competitions this season, and he is producing his best return of his career by some margin, with a goal or assist every 87 minutes. Sky Sports News understands there is confidence he could be sold for a higher fee elsewhere, which adds another layer to a deal that already depends on money as much as form.
Rashford’s title-clinching strike also summed up how Barcelona have used him. He filled in for Lamine Yamal on the right side during El Clasico and made his first start in a month in the same game, showing the range that has helped him stay central to the side even while injuries have shifted him around the forward line. He has become a popular figure in the squad and has formed a close relationship with Roony Bardghji.
The tension is not between Rashford and Barcelona. By all accounts, both sides want the move to continue. The friction is between what Barcelona want to do and what they can afford to do, with United holding the contract until 2028 and no appetite to reopen the fee they already set out in July. Rashford is settled, productive and clearly wanted. That still may not be enough to make the deal work.
For now, the forward has done his part on the pitch. What happens next will depend on whether Barcelona can find money where there appears to be very little left to spare.
