Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe reunited on Friday for their son Deacon’s graduation from New York University, posing for photos with him after the ceremony at Radio City Music Hall. The two, who were married from 1999 to 2008, turned up with other members of their blended family as Deacon marked the end of his college run in front of a packed New York crowd.
Witherspoon, 50, wore a blue midi dress with a white blazer, a cream handbag and heels. Phillippe, 51, kept it casual in a white button-down shirt, black trousers and Nike sneakers. Ava, their 26-year-old daughter, was also there, along with Witherspoon’s ex-husband Jim Toth and their 13-year-old son, Tennessee, making the day feel more like a family gathering than a public appearance.
The graduation also drew a few other familiar faces from the same family orbit. Kate Hudson’s eldest son, Ryder Robinson, graduated from New York University on Friday as well, and Hudson attended with fiancé Danny Fujikawa and their daughter Rani. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell were also spotted at the event, and Russell was seen chatting with and hugging Witherspoon.
For Witherspoon and Phillippe, the reunion fit a pattern that has played out over several years. They met at Witherspoon’s 21st birthday party in 1997 and later co-starred in “Cruel Intentions” two years after that. Since then, they have continued to co-parent Deacon and Ava amicably, returning together for family milestones that include Deacon’s homeschool graduation in 2022 and his album release party in April 2023, when Phillippe shared a post praising “A New Earth” by their son.
Phillippe has also kept the family connection visible online. In 2024, he posted an Instagram Stories message about the old days, writing that they were “hot and drenched in late ’90s angst” and adding that it was “such a cooler time than today,” while tagging Witherspoon. He later posted more family photos tied to Deacon’s work, underscoring how often the two parents still show up for the same moments.
The graduation in New York answered the biggest question around the event before it began: whether Witherspoon and Phillippe would appear together again. They did, and they did so with the easy familiarity of parents who have long learned how to share the spotlight when it belongs to their children.
