Atlanta police said a woman was fatally stabbed on the Beltline near the Ansley Golf Club on Thursday around noon in what investigators described as a random attack that also left a postal worker injured nearby. The victim, later identified Friday by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office as 23-year-old Alyssa Paige, was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, where she died.
The stabbing set off a fast-moving search that stretched through the afternoon and ended hours later, when officers spotted the suspect and the bike he had been riding on Peachtree Street near Pine Street shortly after asking the public for help. Police took him into custody without incident. His identity was not immediately released.
The attack shut down roughly 60 yards of the Beltline behind Flagler Avenue, just south of I-85, and forced Midtown High School and Howard Middle School into temporary lockdown. Atlanta Public Schools said students were escorted to buses to head home, while those who walk or ride bicycles had to get parental permission or be picked up. Police searched by bicycle, on foot, in vehicles and with drones as the city watched for updates through the afternoon.
Atlanta police Chief Darin Schierbaum said the postal worker was struck with a rock at the nearby U.S. Post Office just before the stabbing and was treated for minor injuries. He said both incidents were connected and that the victims were random targets. “We have thousands of people on the Beltline every day, and very few incidents that occur,” Schierbaum said, calling the attack “a shock” and “an outlier.” He said police had reason to believe the suspect could be experiencing a mental health crisis and said officers would make sure he was arrested.
Mayor Andre Dickens said the Beltline is a high-traffic area and noted that the attack happened in daylight, when people are often out for a normal walk or ride. “To have this happen, we know that gives people a little bit of concern, or a lot of concern,” he said. Still, Schierbaum urged people not to avoid the path. “Go out and enjoy the Beltline,” he said. “It’s a great place to be. You’ll probably see me there this weekend.”
The Beltline is a popular walking and biking path in northeast Atlanta, and police maintain a dedicated path force to patrol it and nearby parks and neighborhoods. City officials have said the corridor already has police bike patrols, an extensive camera network and extra lighting. Atlanta Beltline Inc. said it was aware of the incident.
The killing comes after another fatal stabbing in the same area in 2024, a reminder that even with heavy patrols, the path can still become the scene of sudden violence. For now, police say the suspect is in custody and the search has ended, but the questions left behind are about how a random daytime attack reached so many people so quickly.
