Part of the M54 was closed eastbound on Thursday after a car left the road between Shropshire and Wolverhampton, forcing drivers off the motorway while crash investigation work got under way.
The closure runs from junction 3 in Albrighton to junction 2 in Wolverhampton, and National Highways said the eastbound carriageway was due to stay shut for several hours. A diversion using solid square symbols is in place and takes traffic via the A41, A5 and A449.
That means delays are likely to continue along one of the main east-west routes through the area while investigators work at the scene. National Highways gave no shorter timetable than several hours, underscoring that the road will not reopen quickly.
The m54 closure affects the eastbound carriageway between Shropshire and Wolverhampton, with the diversion designed to keep traffic moving around the incident rather than through it. For drivers heading toward Wolverhampton, the immediate next step is to follow the signed route and expect the closure to remain in place for much of the day.
