Anthony Connor died after a collision on the A49 Westwood Way in Wigan on Thursday night, May 7, 2026, as police investigated a crash involving a cyclist and a car.
Greater Manchester Police said it was called to the scene after a report of a cyclist aged in his 30s and a car being involved in the collision. Officers believed Mr Connor was crossing the road when the crash happened.
A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and later released on bail while enquiries continue. Bolton coroner's court has also received a file for Mr Connor.
The road where the crash happened is a major route through Wigan, and police have urged witnesses to come forward with any information that could help the inquiry. Details, including relevant video footage, can be passed to the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741, quoting log 3706 of May 7, 2026.
Tributes began appearing online after news of the death spread, with one Facebook user writing: “Heartbreaking, such a lovely lad and was taken way too soon, rip Anthony Connor.” Another said: “Rip Ant lad gonna miss you, thoughts and love for the family, really just can't believe it, rest easy.”
The arrest, release on bail and coroner’s referral mean the case now moves through both the police investigation and the formal process that will establish the next steps around Connor’s death. For investigators, the crucial issue is whether witnesses or video can fill in the moments before the collision on Westwood Way.
