Mateus Fernandes is growing increasingly likely to leave West Ham this summer, with Aston Villa joining a growing queue of clubs tracking the 21-year-old midfielder. The interest has sharpened as West Ham sit 18th in the Premier League table and are now two games away from relegation.
Fernandes moved from Southampton last year, but his spell in east London may now be short-lived if West Ham cannot pull clear of the drop zone. Football Insider reported on 8 May that the club would struggle to keep him and said relegation would make it impossible for him to remain at the club.
That warning has only gained force as West Ham’s financial position has become part of the conversation around their summer rebuild. If they go down, the club are expected to face pressure to sell players, and Fernandes would likely be near the top of any list of major departures. For a team fighting to hold its Premier League place, the prospect of losing one of its more saleable assets would deepen the damage beyond the final standings.
Aston Villa’s interest comes alongside attention from Manchester United and Manchester City, turning Fernandes into one of the more closely watched midfield names ahead of the window. Former Villa scout Mick Brown said the club could do with a player like him, describing Villa’s need for someone who can “put their foot in and win the ball, and then move it on and progress the play.”
Villa’s angle is tied to their own squad planning. Douglas Luiz is set to leave when his loan deal expires as things stand, leaving the club looking at midfield reinforcements and, more specifically, a combative presence in the centre of the pitch. Fernandes fits that profile, and West Ham’s position makes him easier for rival clubs to target.
The next few days at West Ham now carry weight well beyond one transfer story. If they stay up, they may still be forced into difficult sales, but relegation would turn Fernandes from a prized asset into one of the first names discussed in a fire sale.
