Albemarle County police said they arrested two local men after a three-day online operation focused on the solicitation of minors, with officers engaging with 30 people across multiple platforms before making the arrests. One of those arrested was Amanullah Ahmendzay, 20, of Charlottesville.
The other was Daniel W. Baer, 32, of Albemarle. Both men were charged with the use of a computer for a sexual offense with a minor. Baer was also charged with indecent liberties with a child under the age of 15. Police said both men are being held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail without bond.
The arrests were announced in a press release issued May 13 by the Albemarle County Police Department, which said the investigation remains ongoing. Police thanked the Charlottesville Police Department and the Greene County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in the operation, which was part of enforcement aimed at online solicitation of minors.
That detail matters because the operation did not stop at one site or one conversation. Officers said they dealt with 30 people during the three-day effort, and the arrests of Ahmendzay and Baer are the first named results of the sweep. The case now moves into the courts, where the charges and the evidence gathered online will be tested.
For now, the question is not whether the operation was broad. It was. The question is how many more of the 30 people contacted by officers could face charges as the investigation continues.
