The Congress was expected to name its legislative party leader in Kerala on May 14, with the Congress Legislature Party meeting set for 1 pm at the KPCC headquarters after days of suspense over who would lead the next phase. The decision was due to be taken by newly elected MLAs, following a 40-minute meeting in New Delhi on May 13 between Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge.
KPCC chief Sunny Joseph announced the CLP meeting on May 13, and party general secretary Jairam Ramesh conveyed the development after the Delhi meeting. The move came as the Congress-led UDF, which secured a two-thirds majority in the Kerala Assembly elections, moved to settle its chief ministerial choice and end a delay that had triggered lobbying and protests from grassroots workers.
Among the names in play were K C Venugopal, V D Satheesan and Ramesh Chennithala, with the race sharpened after Venugopal entered the contest and reportedly drew support from a majority of Congress MLAs. Rahul Gandhi had also met several Kerala leaders and around eight former state unit chiefs in recent days to gauge the ground situation before the party moved toward a final decision.
The delay has already begun to affect governance in the state. On May 14, V Sivankutty said the absence of a cabinet after 10 days had created a crisis in the general education department, saying decision making had been hit while lakhs of students and parents waited for the SSLC results. He said school fitness activities were also in disorder as the academic year was about to begin.
That friction captures the pressure on the Congress to settle the issue quickly. The party won a clear mandate, but the 10-day suspense over its chief ministerial face left the government formation process trailing the election result, with internal balancing now colliding with the expectations of students, parents and party workers. If the CLP meeting goes ahead as planned, the next step is no longer whether Congress will pick a leader, but whether it can turn that choice into a functioning cabinet without further delay.
