globally launched Instants on Wednesday, opening a new way for people to send disappearing photos to close friends or mutual followers after testing the feature with select users.

The format is built around speed and impermanence. Users take an Instant with Instagram’s in-app camera, cannot edit it, and cannot upload a photo from their camera roll. They can add text, but that is as far as the editing goes. Shared Instants can be viewed only once and stay available for 24 hours, giving the feature the feel of a private note passed across a crowded room.

says the point is to share authentic moments as they are happening, and Instagram has packed the feature with controls that make it more private than a standard story post. Recipients can react with emojis, reply, and send an Instant back. They cannot screenshot or record what they receive, according to Meta. Shared Instants are stored in a private archive for up to one year, and users can turn that archive into a recap that can be posted to Instagram Stories.

The feature sits inside the Instagram inbox, where users tap the mini photo stack in the bottom right corner to capture one. If someone sends an Instant by mistake, there is an undo button that can delete it from the archive and unsend it to friends who have not opened it yet. Users can also hold down the pile of Instants in their inbox and swipe right to stop receiving them for a while, or block and mute specific people.

Instagram is also testing Instants as a stand-alone app in select regions, including Spain and Italy, a sign the company is still trying to find the right home for the format. The move borrows from , and , while also pushing deeper into a part of social sharing that has become more casual and more private at the same time.

That matters because Instagram has gradually become crowded with influencer content and ads, and many users already turn to Instagram Stories for fast, informal updates. BeReal is no longer as popular as it once was, but the appetite for quick, unpolished sharing has not gone away. Instants is Meta’s latest answer to that shift, and whether users treat it as a novelty or a habit will decide how far it goes beyond launch week.
