Tim Duncan made his first head coaching appearance Tuesday night in Charlotte and helped guide the San Antonio Spurs to a 104-103 win over the Hornets. Duncan coached in place of Gregg Popovich, who missed the game to attend to personal business.
The one-point finish gave Duncan an immediate result in an unfamiliar role. It was also a striking turn for a man who spent 19 seasons with the Spurs as a player before retiring in 2016 and later joining the team’s coaching staff as an assistant coach.
For the Spurs, the night was less about ceremony than necessity. Popovich’s absence pushed Duncan onto the bench, and the game became his first test as a head coach after years of working alongside the staff in a supporting role.
The result kept the Spurs moving forward, but the broader significance is tied to what comes next. Popovich is expected to return to the bench for the Spurs’ next matchup on Friday night in Brooklyn at 7:30 PM ET, bringing the team back to its regular setup after an unexpected one-game shift.
