ROME — Inter and Lazio met in the Coppa Italia final on Wednesday night at the Stadio Olimpico, with the teams listed in very different shapes before kick-off at 21:00 ET. Inter went with a 3-5-2 and started Marcus Thuram, while Lazio lined up in a 4-3-3 and had to lean on an emergency midfield.
The official lineups, released at 19.52, showed Inter with Martinez, Bisseck, Akanji, Bastoni, Dumfries, Barella, Zielinski, Sucic, Dimarco, Thuram and Lautaro. Lazio’s XI was Motta, Marusic, Gila, Romagnoli, Tavares, Basic, Patric, Taylor, Isaksen, Noslin and Zaccagni. By 20.20, Inter figures were already pointing to the importance of the team’s work under Cristian Chivu. Cruz praised him in comments to club media, saying in Italian that Chivu had been good because he did not look players in the face just because they had a name, but trusted the work done during the week and played whoever was in form. He added that Chivu had revitalized several players, especially Zielinski.
Lazio’s side of the story was just as pointed. At 20.25, Angelo Fabiani spoke about Sarri’s future and framed the club’s approach in terms of planning and nerve, saying that in football money is not the difference and that programming, foresight and courage are what matter. He said Lazio were showing that. Then, at 20.35, Beppe Marotta said there would be no “stella d’argento” if Inter won, stripping away any extra layer of celebration talk and leaving the match itself to carry the weight of the night.
The stakes were fixed by the setting and the occasion. This was the Coppa Italia final, played under the lights in Rome and presented as a match that could be watched live on Canale 5 in clear and streamed on Mediaset Infinity and SportMediaset. For Inter, the emphasis was on continuity and the return of Thuram from the start; for Lazio, it was on holding together a midfield built out of necessity. Finals do not usually forgive absences, and this one asked both clubs to show exactly what they had left.
