Jessie Bates III said he still thinks about the Bengals as he heads toward a Nov. 9 matchup with Cincinnati in Madrid, a reminder that his departure still sits close to the surface for both sides. He now plays for the Falcons, but the way he talked about his former team made clear that the split was never just a transaction.
In a recent interview with FOX Sports' Jordan Schultz, Bates said Cincinnati had to pay the offense and could not fit everyone under the cap number. He said he was with the Bengals for five years, had a great run, and lived through a couple of trips to the Super Bowl. He also said that period still has a special place in his heart, which is why the conversation around Bengals standings has drifted back toward what Cincinnati lost when it moved on.
The numbers help explain why the discussion still matters. Bates has an 84.1 Pro Football Focus grade this season, and he has posted an 80-plus grade in three of his four Falcons seasons. He also has three pass breakups, three forced fumbles and one interception this year. In other words, the Bengals let him go for financial reasons, but he has done enough since then to suggest he would have more than lived up to a new deal in Cincinnati.
That is where the friction stays alive. The Bengals brought in Bryan Cook this past offseason, but the need for another playmaker at safety has not gone away. Bates has remained productive, Cincinnati has kept looking for answers, and the cost of keeping him then looks smaller now than it did around COVID, when the cap picture was tighter. That is why the question around him is not just sentimental. It is whether a player the Bengals once could not afford is the kind of difference-maker they still wish they had.
For now, the next marker is fixed. Bates is set to face Cincinnati on Nov. 9 in Madrid, and unless the Falcons decide he is available before then, the Bengals will be left with the same question that has followed this story from the start: what would their defense look like if they had found a way to keep him?
