DeForest Buckner is set to play for the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders, bringing the 32-year-old back to a San Francisco uniform for the first time since the 2019 Super Bowl. The return gives the 49ers a veteran defensive tackle again just as they come out of a bye week and into a matchup that will test how quickly their front can reset.

Buckner’s arrival matters because the 49ers have been searching for a steadier rush plan, and he comes in as a proven interior force with a 6-foot-7 frame and a history of producing as a pass rusher. Raheem Morris said the defense can move players through three-technique, nose, four-eye and edge alignments, and Buckner is expected to work largely in the role he has known for years.

Morris said the group has been “moving people around” and even kicking bigger edges inside to create different ways to pressure the quarterback. That flexibility means Buckner’s exact snap count is not fixed, but the plan is clear: find what he does well and build around it with the rest of the line. The defensive tackle room around him includes Osa Odighizuwa, Gracen Halton and Sebastian Valdez, a younger group that now has a veteran anchor in the middle of it.

That mix becomes more important with Nick Bosa trending to play this week after San Francisco went a few weeks without him and saw the pass rush dip. Morris said it would not be a bad time to get a player like Buckner, and he expects Buckner and Bosa to be together for the first time this year. For the 49ers, Sunday is less about symbolism than usage: Buckner is back, Bosa may be back, and the front now has to turn that into pressure that lasts four quarters.
