What Did Brandon Aiyuk Do? 49ers Face Reinstatement Crossroads

Brandon Aiyuk has filed for NFL reinstatement after a 13-month hiatus from the 49ers, putting his status back in motion and forcing the team to confront what comes next. Drew Rosenhaus told's Adam Schefter that Aiyuk planned to report Friday at 3 p.m. to the 49ers' Santa Clara headquarters.

That timing is why the question is suddenly live again: if Aiyuk is allowed back, the 49ers may have to decide quickly whether to release him, trade him before Tuesday's deadline, or ask the NFL for a roster exemption or a delayed ruling. John Lynch said the team is working with the NFL Management Council to navigate “kind of a different situation” and is looking for “a pathway for both sides here that works.”

For now, the 49ers are treating the matter as unsettled. Kyle Shanahan said on KNBR that it was “the least of my concerns,” added that there was “no expectation” of an Aiyuk reunion, and said he had “moved on with that mentally.” He also said there was no meeting between him and the football staff Friday, a sign that the club is preparing for practice while the roster question hangs over it.

That leaves an unusual gap between the public tone and the mechanics behind it. Last December, the 49ers placed Aiyuk on the reserve/left squad list, and he has been away from the club for 13 months. He has also not played in two years, since a severe knee injury ended his 2024 season. The on-field roster is one thing; the administrative question is another, and the NFL has not said whether reinstatement will be immediate or delayed.

The people around him are not reading the situation the same way. Trent Williams said Aiyuk is family, but also said he had not talked to him and that the receiver needs time to figure out what comes next. Brock Purdy said he loved what they did together and would have nothing but love if he saw him, while George Kittle answered the topic with a joke and sent questions back to John Lynch or Shanahan.

What Brandon Aiyuk did was file to come back. What the 49ers do if he gets the green light is the real issue now, and the answer may shape the team's roster before Tuesday and determine whether this becomes a return, a trade or another delay.
