High Point and Liberty will open the season against each other at 11:59 p.m. ET on Sunday, a late-night start that puts High-point Basketball at the center of the Field of 68’s Opening Day Marathon. The game will be played at the Rock Hill Sports & Event Center in South Carolina and streamed on YouTube.
The matchup lands at a moment when both teams arrive with real expectations, but for different reasons. High Point is coming off a 31-5 season that ended with a Big South championship, an 83-82 upset of Wisconsin in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and a loss to Arkansas in the Round of 32. Liberty finished 26-8 and won its second straight Conference USA regular-season title, but it also enters with no starters back from last season’s lineup.
That difference is why High Point is favored by 7.5 points even before the first possession. Flynn Clayman has to replace Rob Martin and Terry Anderson, who each averaged 16 points per game, but he still brings back pieces that give the roster a shape: Cam’Ron Fletcher, who averaged 13.2 points and 7.1 rebounds, Conrad Martinez, who averaged 8.8 points and 3.3 assists per game, and Braden Hausen, who averaged 6.7 points. High Point also added CJ Brown from South Florida and Isaac Garrett from Oakland.
Liberty’s problem is bigger and simpler. It lost its entire starting lineup and six leading scorers who combined for 71.3 points per game, so its first test is not just whether the new group can score, but whether it can function together in its first game as a unit. That is the part that makes the number matter: a team with continuity is laying points against a team still trying to define itself.
The next thing to watch is whether that early gap holds when the game tips at 11:59 p.m. ET. If High Point’s returning players settle in quickly, Clayman’s team can start another run with the same edge that carried it through last season. If Liberty’s transfers click faster than expected, the opener of the eight-game event could turn into one of the few games on the card that feels settled only after the final buzzer.
