Husker Game: Gunnar Gottula ruled out for Nebraska against Washington

Nebraska’s Husker Game preparation took a hit Thursday when Gunnar Gottula was ruled out in the injury update for Saturday’s matchup with Washington. The offensive lineman had been dealing with a concussion after missing the end of the Oregon game.

Gottula’s absence matters because he has been one of Nebraska’s most flexible blockers this season, starting five games at right tackle and two at left guard. That kind of swing value is hard to replace, especially this late in the week when the Huskers are trying to settle their line before kickoff.

The timing makes the update more striking. Gottula seemed ready to go on Wednesday, then was taken off the board on Thursday, leaving Nebraska with one less option up front just as it heads into a Big Ten game that needs cleaner protection and more stability in the run game. The change came in the same update that listed Vincent Shavers Jr. as questionable, while Demond Williams Jr. and Jayden Limar were moved from questionable to probable.

Shavers has been available in every Nebraska game this season and has one start, 29 tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. Limar has carried 12 times for 47 yards and one touchdown this season. The status movement on both sides underscores how much the late-week report can shape what Saturday looks like before anyone takes a snap.

What Nebraska has not said is how long Gottula will be out after the concussion. For now, the only clear answer is that he will not be on the field Saturday, and Nebraska will have to sort out a thinner line without one of its most useful pieces.
