Florida A&M returned home Saturday to Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida, with a chance to reset its season against Southern University, and it did so in a game that carried real weight for both sides. The two teams entered with identical 1-3 conference records, leaving little room for another stumble in the SWAC race.

That is why the search around Southern University vs Florida A&M centered on more than a date on the schedule. Florida A&M came in at 2-6 after a 31-28 loss to Arkansas–Pine Bluff last weekend, while Southern arrived at 3-5 after falling 24-21 to Texas Southern. Both had just missed on narrow chances to improve, and both needed a clean response before their conference path narrowed further.

Florida A&M had reasons to believe its offense could carry the day. Against Arkansas–Pine Bluff, the team gained 394 total yards without turning the ball over, and Armond Parker put together the best passing game of his season. He completed 23 of 37 passes for 319 yards and two touchdowns, then added a 37-yard rushing score. In six appearances, Parker has now thrown for 1,244 yards and 10 touchdowns, while Florida A&M averages 210 passing yards per game. Corey Petty leads the team with 22 receptions, Kieren Jackson has 292 receiving yards and 634 all-purpose yards, and Denzel Johnson has a team-high 53 tackles.

The problem for Florida A&M is that the same offense that looked sharp last weekend has to be paired with a defense that has been leaking production on the ground. Southern was looking to attack a Florida A&M unit surrendering 224.3 rushing yards per game, and that makes Trey Holly the name that changes the matchup. Holly leads Southern with 829 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, and he is averaging 103.6 yards per game. Christian Johnson has also given Southern a steady passing option, completing 89 of 158 passes for 1,059 yards and 10 touchdowns with one interception.

Southern brings its own pressure points into the game. Tayton James leads the team with 59 tackles and four sacks, while Ckelby Givens has 9.5 tackles for loss, and Southern is still allowing 218 rushing yards per contest even as it averages 174.6 rushing yards per game on offense. That leaves Marshall Faulk’s first-year team trying to win a game that would matter far beyond one Saturday, especially after two teams with conference hopes both took three-point losses a week earlier.

Florida A&M has owned the recent series, winning six straight meetings, seven of eight since 2011, and beating Southern 43-35 in Baton Rouge last season. But past control only matters if it still holds against the next snap. For Florida A&M, the question is whether Parker’s passing can keep pace long enough to offset the run defense. For Southern, the answer rests with whether Holly can force the game onto the ground before the Jaguars do.
