Fenerbahçe left Mason Greenwood out of its squad for the Göztepe match on the day of the game, a late absence that changed the shape of the club’s plans for the Trendyol Süper Lig’s 10th week. The reason for his omission was not explained.

That omission matters because Greenwood had been one of Fenerbahçe’s recent form players, yet his name was missing when the club published the matchday group for Fenerbahçe vs Goztepe. The same announcement set out the starting XI and bench, leaving no room to infer that he was being held back for rotation or a minor change of plans.

Fenerbahçe’s starting XI featured Ederson, Semedo, Skriniar, Oppong, Levent Mercan, Guendouzi, Kante, Kerem Aktürkoğlu, İrfan Can Kahveci, Oğuz Aydın and Lukaku, while the bench listed Mert Günok, Tarık, Yiğit Efe, Mert Müldür, Mimovic, İsmail Yüksek, Bartuğ Elmaz, Mert Hakan, Dorgeles Nene and Vedat Muriç. Göztepe responded with Arda Özçimen, Arda Okan, Taha, Sundberg, Bokele, Akonnor, Miroshi, Rhaldney, Antunes, Janderson and Juan, with Oğuzhan Çakır appointed as referee and Mehmet Kısal, Kerem Ersoy, Gürcan Hasova, Alan Kijas and Murat Tuğberk Curbay also named to the officiating team.

The missing detail is the one that gives the move its weight. Notbir said, “İngiliz yıldızın neden kadroda yer almadığı henüz açıklanmadı,” which leaves Greenwood’s omission without a public explanation even as the match squad was finalized. That is a sharper problem for Fenerbahçe than a routine selection call, because the club was also managing broader uncertainty around its technical direction before the national break.

Fenerbahçe had already said Dirk Kuyt would be in charge of the senior team until the national break and would lead the side in the Göztepe, Liverpool and Çorum FK matches. It also said Aykut Kocaman had come to Istanbul and was open to taking charge, after the club parted ways with İsmail Kartal and started work on hiring a new coach. Greenwood’s absence therefore lands inside a wider period of transition, with one of the squad’s more productive names missing and no explanation yet on the record.

For now, the only firm conclusion is that Greenwood was left out on matchday and Fenerbahçe did not say why. Until that changes, the question is not whether he was available in form, but why the club chose to go into a 10th-week league match without one of its recent attacking options.
