has put Sam Darnold’s future with the Seattle Seahawks back in the spotlight, and the timing is no accident. Dan Graziano wrote on October 21 that Darnold will have one year left on his contract after this season, leaving Seattle with a major decision before the 2027 money is due.

That matters because the Seahawks owe Darnold $35.5 million for 2027, and none of it is guaranteed. He also has a $10 million roster bonus scheduled to become guaranteed in March, which gives the team a near-term deadline if it wants to change course. Seattle helped Darnold win Super Bowl LX, but the path from that celebration to a long-term commitment has grown narrower by the week.

The reason the conversation is moving now is Darnold’s play. Through Seattle’s first six games, he has thrown seven interceptions, and the Seahawks are 3-3 after his two-interception night in a 17-14 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos. One of those throws set up the winning field goal, a reminder that the margin between a winning season and a costly one can be one bad decision in the fourth quarter.

At the same time, Jeremy Fowler reported that Drew Lock has been making an impression on the Seahawks in practice and in relief of Darnold. Lock has thrown four touchdown passes without an interception in two appearances this season and has completed more than 70% of his passes, which gives Seattle a credible alternative at the same position. That is the part that complicates everything for Darnold: the Seahawks are not looking at an expensive future with no other option.

Graziano’s point was not that Seattle must move on, but that the structure of the deal makes the choice unavoidable. He noted that $17.5 million of Darnold’s 2026 compensation became guaranteed shortly after Seattle’s championship victory, but the 2027 season is a different matter. The Seahawks can keep him, extend him or walk away before the roster bonus locks in, and each path carries a different cost.

For Darnold, the next few months will say as much about trust as it does about salary. If he steadies the turnovers, Seattle can justify keeping the championship quarterback it once bet on. If the interceptions keep piling up and Lock keeps playing well, the Seahawks will reach March with a decision they can no longer avoid.
