Jaxson Smith-njigba draws Chiefs' warning as Spagnuolo calls him elite

Steve Spagnuolo did not hide the challenge in front of the Chiefs. On Thursday, the Kansas City defensive coordinator called Jaxon Smith-Njigba “really elite” while looking ahead to Sunday night’s game against the Seahawks.

The reason the comment landed is simple: Smith-Njigba has been producing at a level few receivers can match. He leads the league in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, and through six games he has 49 catches for 717 yards and seven scores.

That kind of production is not a one-week spike. Over the last two seasons, opponents have had trouble slowing him down, and his lowest output this year came on Oct. 4 against the Chargers, when he still managed five catches for 76 yards. For the Chiefs, that is the problem. He is not just winning on one route or one coverage look. He is winning across games, across coverages and across weeks.

Spagnuolo also leaned into the part of Smith-Njigba that makes the matchup harder to dismiss. He said he had heard high-character reports about the receiver and that pairing that with elite talent makes for a difficult player to defend. That is as much a compliment as it is a warning, because the Chiefs are not preparing for a gadget piece or a short stretch of hot play. They are preparing for a receiver who has become the league’s most productive target.

For Kansas City, the question now is not whether Smith-Njigba deserves attention. It is how much help the Chiefs will need to keep him from turning Sunday night into another statement game. Spagnuolo has already made the respect clear. The next answer has to come on the field.
